Congratulations to eight Highlands Latin School seniors recognized as National Merit Scholars.
Hans Kiesling, Kara Moran, Sydney Petrie, August Rothpletz, and Joseph Stachnik were named Semifinalists, and Jake Hamilton, Owen Meyer, and Jonny Steinrock were recognized as Commended Students.
These students, awarded for their performance on the PSAT, make up 22% of the senior class.
Jake Hamilton credited HLS with instilling in him a strong work ethic that prepared him for his excellent performance on the PSAT. He said that his HLS education taught him to “work hard for long periods of time, which is important in test taking.”
August Rothpletz said that learning Latin and Greek at HLS strengthened his ability to think rationally. He continued: “It definitely gave me a strong foundation in reading.”
Kara Moran echoed these sentiments. She said, “The environment at HLS is so focused on encouraging excellence, it was easy to work hard to succeed in school. The care each teacher has had for my personal growth has enabled me to get the most out of each of my classes.”

The National Merit Scholarship program is the most prestigious national academic award for high school seniors. Less than 1% of college-bound seniors are recognized as semifinalists and less than 3% are recognized as commended students.
